August 19 - Arrivals and Departures
By the end of the day -- Harriet, Megan, and I have self-evacuated to Flora's Roseville residence, as a precaution against the advancing LNU Lightning Complex Fire, taking the just-arrived-today Apple Macbook Pro 2020 and a host of other items, including the old computer, for safe-keeping. Goodness! Where to start?
How about with the fire itself, which arose in Napa, three days ago on August 16, during the bizarre northward-coursing chubasco, with its lightning and wind, and has now
spread in all cardinal directions and beyond to include our general area.
But, before we really know the general and specific scenarii,
we can see and
smell the situation --
ash on pavement, cars, and street;
leaden yellow-orange sky;
distinct aura of smoke in the air...
heading out just to get a bead on the environs,
and,
OK,
a triple-supply run,
lest the immediate infrastructure temporarilly goes down.
The fact that there's no scenic picture from the first mart verifies that the Vaca Mountains are not in view due to the murky air quailty; and, as for the second,
the silence and eery ashfall recall video of 9/11...
Return, and -- voila! -- the MacBook has arrived during the absence (thankful there are no porch pirates!), and,
after a considerable delay,
carefully
open
and
initially
configure,
before

Lagoon
Valley,
which has now closed I-80 southwest of here,
motivates us to consider self-evacution, as roads on the west of town now show red on Google Maps, and we would have limited options should the snarls migrate east.
So pack-up we do --
including new, hardly-dealt-with new computer, old one, a host of key books, documents, music.
But first, have to catch a bit of the 2020 Democratic National Convention on this the third night, staying home just long enough to catch words of wisdom from Barack Obama (b. 1961) and
Kamala Harris (b. 1964)
Then off we go to
Flora's Roseville residence,
still downwind from the conflagration,
but far enough to serve as a safe haven for now.
Coronavirus, Fire, Horrible Four-Year Criminal Presidency at present --
yet somehow
the creative human spirit of surival endures!
